In the sea of dating apps, Plenty of Fish has a competitive userbase, but in comparison to newer applications the site is more like a blast from the past. A barrage of options help you filter your search for the ideal mate. Upgraded members have access to a number of additional features like the ability to upload 16 images, read receipts on emails and an ad-free Plenty of Fish experience. Plenty of Fish now has its own Tinder-like swiping feature called “Meet Me”. If you’re looking to upgrade from Tinder and fine tuning is your thing—Plenty of Fish may be your greatest catch.

Profiles 7.2

Just like the other filter-based dating apps in its field, Plenty of Fish makes you fill out a relatively long laundry list of information about yourself before you’re even allowed to begin your searching and swiping. You’ll be asked to answer questions concerning your personal habits, ambitions and astrological sign.

The profile is massive, but unfortunately it doesn’t have the modern automatic filtering features of newer dating apps like Hinge. Plenty of Fish doesn’t match you with people with similar interests whatsoever, which might make finding a soulmate a little more difficult.

Matching 7

Plenty of Fish uses your general location to find people who are nearby and uses a Tinder-like swiping variant called “Meet Me” as well as search filters similar to OkCupid.

The available search options on Plenty of Fish still appear to be somewhat random. Search results will often still be outside of the selected range and won’t feature other filters you selected. The overall search system feels dated. It makes you do all of the work and doesn’t reward with accurate results.

Filters 6.5

Just like setting up your profile, tapping on “refine search” will present you with a wide variety of options to filter potential matches. There are a range of options including gender, age, intent, ethnicity, body type, etc. While these filters will give you some control, they often seem to be overridden by location. If you're looking for someone nearby that's great, but it will be a hurdle for people looking for their perfect match.

Communication 7.9

One of the great features of Plenty of Fish is that you do not have to wait to match before messaging other users. On the down side, this increases the volume of unwanted messages compared to the more conventional match-then-talk dynamic like Tinder. But, for those frustrated with the restriction of sites like Tinder and Bumble, striking up a conversation with a great opening line before matching might appeal.

Value 6.1

Plenty of Fish was a popular site in the pre-smartphone era, and to their credit they've made an attempt at competing with a new generation of apps. While the site's filters and messaging could do with an update, the Plenty of Fish is still popular and has a large userbase. If you're looking for a change from Tinder, Plenty of Fish could be worth a shot, especially considering it's free to download and use.
