Birthed from the forward-thinking minds of two former Apple employees, Nest boasts an iconic and simplified design, replicating the nostalgic round thermostats of the first gen of home heaters. Combatting some of the newer angular models, Nest’s round design brings ease of use with an uncomplicated interface. By turning a silver dial encircling its display, you can manually adjust the temperature, or simply use your mobile app controller.

Nest’s platform is truly striking. The mobile app lends itself to an entire world of customizable automation options. From syncing your lighting to scheduling your preferred temperatures, Nest’s software is incredibly mature. It recognizes your temperature preferences and notices when you’re home, what temperature you like your home to be during breakfast and dinner, and helps you save energy by showing a “leaf” icon when your settings are conserving energy.
Nest’s software also continues to partner with other leading forces in the home automation world to make your already smart home even smarter, like self-washing machines, auto garage doors, and wireless home security.
Warranty 8.9
Expect two years of warranty coverage, including defects in workmanship or materials, from Nest Learning Thermostat. If you decide to take advantage of the warranty or require repair on parts, your period of coverage from service date is 90 days. Compared to competitors, Nest’s warranty seems to be the best by far.

Nest is a performer—this much is true. The small device operates seamlessly after requiring a brief set-up. In about 30 minutes, you can hook your Nest up to the same spot as your old thermostat by connecting a few wires. After initial install, Nest begins to study your temperature preferences, learns about your schedule (re: when you’re home and when you’re away), and gives you the ability to control anything configured with its platform. I’ve yet to see Nest behave differently than what is promised. Nest, by definition, delivers its promise: smart, automated climate control within the home, and endless home automation possibilities.

What makes Nest next-to-priceless in my opinion: I never have to remember to turn off my thermostat before leaving for work (because Nest knows my schedule). But if you’re into numbers, Nest’s energy-saving features (like turning off automatically, or reducing temperature when not in use) can help reduce your heating bill by 10-12% and cooling bill by 15%. In under two years, the device pays for itself. $250 for a thermostat may sound steep, but what you’re really investing in is the future of home automation.
