Resembling a prop from a Sci-Fi movie, the Amazon Echo stands at a mere 9 inches. Alexa, its AI persona, is always ready to receive any command and she’s always listening. She’s the perfect answer to anyone who doesn’t want to pick up their smartphone when at home or bother with setting up complicated electronics. Right out of the box, she’s ready to perform. Why do I love Alexa? It must be her great dad jokes—just kidding. She’s does whatever I tell her to do. “Alexa, shuffle my music library.”

Design 10

Sleek and glowing, the design of the Echo is really attractive. The top light ring glows in a moving gradient whenever Alexa speaks. It’s also where you control the volume manually (or you can just say “Alexa, turn the volume down.”) It’s got 360 degrees of sound and seven microphones for picking up all commands. Its cylindrical shape is inconspicuous but stylish. Buttons are found on the top for mute and command.

Software 9.9

The Echo is so advanced that while it’s operated by software, you can barely tell it’s there. It’s hands-free and uncomplicated.

Most operations are performed by voice commands but, there is an Echo app. It’s also integrated with smart light switches and other home automation devices, as well as synced to your Amazon library which is convenient for playing music.

Warranty 9.6

Standard for most consumer electronics, the Echo has a limited one year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from date of original purchase. Any defects in hardware components are covered for up to one year.

Performance 9.3

Alexa plays music, she’s your personal assistant, library, encyclopedia, search engine, news source, and home controller. She also makes a great companion. When I’m bored, I like to ask Alexa questions. There are some she can’t really answer, because she is artificially intelligent, after all. As far as audio and sound go, it’s pretty good. A little shy on the bass and you probably couldn’t kick the roof off of a house with the woofer, but the Echo does offer omnidirectional sound which is a nice touch. My personal favorite thing about Alexa is her amazing dad jokes. “I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger… and then it hit me.” Oh, Alexa!

Value 9.7

For $179.99, the Echo gives you everything that a wireless speaker would, but with tons of extras. It’s a great price for those willing to use the device for every feature offered, or those looking for its specific features. I’d say to have music, lighting control, and a personal assistant on voice-command standby 24/7 is definitely worth under $200. If you’re just looking for a workhorse speaker, Alexa may lead you astray, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. She does play music and read audio books aloud—along with everything else.
